The 24th South Tyrol Foal Championship at the Alps Coliseum equestrian centre in Egna/Neumarkt provided the grand finale to this year’s province-wide appraisal of foals. Fifty-five of the finest Haflinger foals from the current crop were assessed by an international panel of experts. The event impressively highlighted the high standard of breeding and the enduring passion within South Tyrolean Haflinger breeders.
The best among the colts: (from right) winner WALENCIO-1-M BZ33242 (owner: Robert Marmsoler from Castelrotto/Kastelruth), runner-up ASLAN BR-M BZ33126 (owner: Heinrich Breitenberger from Ultimo/Ulten), 3rd place ALBINO-M BZ33230 (owner: Helmut Lochmann from Tesimo/Tisens), 4th place WINNI-M BZ33201 (owner: Simon Dapoz from Badia/Abtei) and 5th place SINNER HL-M BZ33105 (owner: Hans Lunger from Collepietra/Steinegg)
The appraisal of foals held in September formed the basis for the Championship. During this event, over 400 foals were identified and inspected on site. Of the 90 foals entered, 55 eventually competed at the Alps Coliseum.
The most beautiful fillies: (from right) winner MERCEDES BENZ BZ33162 (owner: Wolfgang & Berta Wendlinger from Lazfons/Latzfons), runner-up MALEA HL BZ33104 (owner: Hans Lunger from Collepietra/Steinegg) and 3rd place M.SOLEY-R BZ33055 (owner: Josef Reiterer from San Genesio/Jenesien)

The three-member judging panel – comprising former breed expert Dr Andrea Sgambati, South Tyrolean breed judge Peter Gruber and guest judge Genest Brigand from France – was delighted. The colts in particular impressed with their exceptionally high quality, which, according to Sgambati, is a rare feature compared to the usually dominant fillies.
In the colt category, Walencio-1-M (breeder: Robert Marmsoler, Siusi/Seis) took first place ahead of Aslan BR-M (Heinrich Breitenberger, Ultimo/Ulten) and Albino-M (Helmut Lochmann, Tesimo/Tisens). The title in the filly category was secured by Mercedes Benz (owned by Wolfgang & Berta Wendlinger, Chiusa/Klausen), followed by Malea HL (owned by Hans Lunger, Collepietra/Steinegg) and M.Soley-R (Josef Reiterer, San Genesio/Jenesien).
Another highlight was the second edition of the quality foal auction, which took place in a hybrid format, with a top price of 8,000 euros for a foal that moved from Lazfons/Latzfons to the Val di Giovo/Jaufental valley. The sales model is currently being further developed, and the auction is set to establish itself as a hub for the marketing of quality foals.
