Haflingers are an essential component of equestrian sports throughout all of South Tyrol. There are a number of traditional local and regional Haflinger sports disciplines – for instance Haflinger racing. They are typically organised by the South Tyrol Haflinger Sports Association, which is also in charge of the annual Haflinger Sleigh Race and Skijoring County Championships, Trot Racing County Championships and Autumn Gallop Races. The traditional Easter Monday Haflinger Gallop Races at the Merano/Meran racecourse, which attract thousands of horse enthusiasts every year, are an absolute highlight of every racing season. All other disciplines are organised and promoted by the Provincial Federation of South Tyrol Haflinger Horse Breeders – with the support of a sports advisory council which was set up specifically for that purpose. The primary focus is on organising and hosting tournaments, on providing training for both horses and riders in a number of disciplines and on promoting a selection of specific disciplines.
