It’s that time of the year – time for the Val Sarentino/Sarntal Haflinger Breeders’ Association’s annual sleigh race and skijoring contest at the Rabensteiner inn and farmstead in Mules/Muls. And on Saturday 22 January 2022, crowds from near and far braved fierce gusts of icy wind and excitedly cheered on the Haflingers racing in a number of categories with their golden winter coats glistening in the sun.

Every year, the Haflinger sleigh races of the Val Sarentino/Sarntal valley are something of a special treat: Only here do the horses wear traditional collars and draw wooden sleighs – and many a driver can be spotted wearing beautifully embellished local costumes that are unique to the valley.
