Another top event of the South Tyrolean Haflinger breeding calendar: A total of 84 young Haflinger horses lined up and ready to stand the test at this year's Foal and Young Horses Championships on Sunday 15 October at the Unterwirtshof inn of San Genesio/Jenesien.
That's 52 foals and 32 one- and two-year olds scrutinised by two teams of judges – one for the foals among the contestants (Helmuth Breitenberger, Paul Premstaller, Thomas Kirschner) and another for the young horses' group (Paolo Panteghini, Hans Schiller, Peter Zöggeler).
All of the foals had been expertly prepared and were very well presented, reflecting the high levels of quality achieved in Haflinger breeding throughout South Tyrol. And the typically large crowds show a strong interest among the public in this most local of breeds – a factor which in turn continues to encourage the breeders, whose commitment and motivation has once more seen a considerable boost in recent years. Some of the foals presented in San Genesio/Jenesien will also take part in the upcoming Italian National Foal Championship held next weekend near Sondrio (Lombardy).
