Fantastic impressions, a superb atmosphere and great feedback: That's the takeaway of the 17th edition of the South Tyrol Haflinger Foal Championships last Sunday. And many a breeder from the neighbouring provinces, too, made sure not to miss out on the chance to present their newest Haflinger foals at this key location on the Monzoccolo/Tschögglberg plateau.
For breeders from all over South Tyrol, the Championship is an absolute must-attend date, as it traditionally unites the most promising Haflinger foals from the entire region – and if you don't happen to have a foal to present yourself, it is considered a matter of honour to still have a look around what your colleagues have to offer.
As this year's edition has shown, South Tyrolean breeding is in a prime position not just when it comes to quality but also in terms of numbers: A grand total of 18 colts and 41 fillies were presented on 20 October 2019. Rating almost sixty promising candidates is never an easy task for the judges – but the team consisting of Haflinger expert Giuseppe Zamboni together with the Swiss guest judges Barbara Vuillemin and Werner Reichen as well as Peter Zöggeler, the breeders' representative for South Tyrol, was determined and unflinching in its effort to inspect every single foal in a professional manner.
Meanwhile, the crowd swarmed around the outside of the ring and watched the action closely: In addition to the many breeders in attendance, who were busy exchanging and discussing views, the line-up had also attracted a whole host of representatives from the equestrian world as well as the general public. This excellent turnout ultimately seals the success of the Foal Championships as a breeding event and proves once more just how very much all kinds of people enjoy meeting at occasions revolving around the Haflinger breed.
